Some 2,2*-substituted diphenylamines of the general structures HOOC-C6H4-NHC6H4X(X=-COOH,-OH,-SH or -NH2 and their copper (II) complexes have been prepared. All the compounds have been characterized by their elemental analysis, 1R and electronic spectral studies, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. All the ligands and their metal complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity on gram positive (Staphylococcus) and gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria and for their antifungal activity on Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus nidulens fungi. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) values of the compounds have been determined by the serial dilution method, In some of the cases, the biocidal activities of the ligands have been several times increased on their coordination with the metal ions.
