The formation constants of Cu(II) chelates with 4-methoxy picolinic acid N- oxide and corresponding ternary chelates with glycine and α-alanine have been determined potentiometrically by varying proportions of dioxane-water, acetone-water, isopropanol- water, ethanol-waier and methanol - water at 30°C and 0.1 M ionic strength, the results are discussed with reference to the change in dielectric constant of water in the presence of organic solvent, change in structureless and hydrogen bonding in water, relative solvent basicity and proton solvation by the organic solvent. The Δ log K values evaluated for ternary systems are in statistical order. The more destabilisation in higher percentages of solvents is discussed in terms of polar effects of solvents.
