31p NMR spectroscopy provides strong evidence for inversion of configuration when cis-[PtCI2 (PBu3) (PhCN)] (1) reacted with amine to give trans-[PtCI2 (PBu3) (amine)] Tht use of 15N-amines has enable us to look at*2J(31P-15N) in both cis and trans isomers of [PtCI2 (PBu3)(15NHMe2)l complexes. Reaction of cis-[PtCI2(PBu3) (amine)] with different amines have been examined and provides cis-[PtCI2(PBu3) (amine)] complex with retention of configuration. Ligand-ligand exchanged in complex (1) takes place at different temperatures, but in complex (2) amine-amine exchanged takes place at a higher temperature (above 0°C). Rate constants in CHCl3, and benzene solutions of the complex (1) of various amines have been determined and discussed in terms of basicity and steric hindrance of entering amine ligand.
