Oxidation of DL-alanine by cerium (IV) sulphate in the presence of manganese (II) ions has been found to be first order in oxidant and fractional order in DL-alanine concentrations. Various hypotheses for the mechanism of acid catalysis have been tested. The energy and entropy of activation have been calculated as 12.2 k. Cal. mol-1 and -32.03 k. Cal, moI-1 K-1. respectively. A tentative mechanism has been proposed in consitence with the experimental data.
