Kinetic study of the hydrolysis of 2,6-dimethylphenyl phosphate diester has been carried out in acid as well as in buffer media, in the region 0.1 to 6.0 mol.dm.-3 HCl and pH 1.24 to 7.46, at 97±0.5°C. The hydrolysis of diester involves monoester as an intermediate. The diester has been found to be reactive via three main species i.e. conjugate acid, neutral and mononegative species respectively. Bond fission, molecularity and order of reaction have been supported by Arrhenius parameters,1-3 Zucker-Hammett hypothesis,4 concentration, solvent effect etc. Comparative isokinetic rate data of similarly substituted other phenyl phosphate diesters, whose mechanism is known, supported P-O bond fission.
