Rhizomes of two Rheum species were analysed for the presence of anthraquinones and a quercetin glycoside (rutin) by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Variations in the active contents were found in rhizomes collected from different populations and different altitude. The contents also vary with season and age of the plants.
