Complexes of rare earth metal ions viz , Y (III), La (III), Pr (III) , Nd (III) , Sm (III) , Gd (III), Dy (III) with the Schiff base 2-N - ( 2’ hydroxy – 1’ – naphthaldimine ) – 4, 6 - dimethylbenzothiazole have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analytical, thermogravimetric, molar conductance, UV – Visible and IR spectral data. The ligand coordinates to the metal ion in a bidentate fashion giving complexes of the type [ MLCl2(H2O) 3] Cl. Spectral data reveal that the ligand is bonded to the metal ion through azomethine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen. The metal complexes exhibit antibacterial activity.
