Charge transfer complex of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-7-nitro-1, 4-naphthoquinone-2, 6-dimethylani-line has been studied in various solvents of varying polarity. The stoichiometry of the complex was found to be 1:1 in all the solvents. The results were interpreted on the basis of solubility parameter theory of solutions developed by Buchowski et al and Huong, Platzer and Josien. There is a linear relationship between the formation constant, Kc i.e. log Kc and solubility parameter, §S and those between the position of the charge transfer band, A (nm) and §S. The linearity of the plot of λ(nm) Vs §S has been interpreted as due to the decrease in the potential energy of the excited charge-transfer state.
