Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Some New 4-(4'-Azetidionyl Benzene Sulphonyl)-1-Methyl Piperazine

4-(4'-sulphanilyl)-1-methyl piperazine (2) have been prepared by the reaction of 4-acetamido benzene sulphonyl chloride with 1-methyl piperazine followed by hydrolysis of the product with ethanol/HCl. This compound (2) undergoes facile condensation with aromatic aldehydes to give the corresponding 4-(4'-arylidenesulphanilyl)-1-methyl piperazines (3a-h) in good yield. Cyclocondensation of compound (3a-h) with chloro acetyl chloride yields 4-(4'-azetidinonyl benzene sulphonyl)-1-methyl piperazines (4a-h).
