(2-Hydroxy imino) 4-Methylacetophenone semicarbazone (HIMAPSC) extracts cobalt (II) quantitatively (99.8%) into chloroform from an aqueous solution of pH 7.2-8.0. The chloroform extract shows an intense peak at 390 nm (lmax). Beer's law is obeyed over the CO(II) concentration range 0.1-5 μg/ml. The molar absorptivity is 16749 L mole-1 cm-1 at 390 nm. The composition of extracted species is found to be 1:2 (CO : HIMAP) by Job's continuous variation and mole ratio method. The interference by various ions has been studied. The proposed method has been applied to determination of CO (II) in high speed steel sample.
KEYWORDS:1-methyl piperazine; cyclocondensation
