NHPQS(II), used as a coupling component was prepared by the chlorosulphonation of quinoline giving 8-quinolinesulphonyl chloride (I) followed by condensation with 3-aminophenol. Nineteen N-(3-hydroxyphenyl-4-R-azo)-8-quinolinesulphonamide disperse dyes (IVa-s) were prepared by coupling (II) with various diazo components (IIIa-s). The compounds (IVa-s) are characterized by elemental and spectral analysis and their dyeing performance on polyester fabric was assessed. These compounds gave yellow, brown and off-white shades with poor to good light fastness, good to excellent wash fastness and 61% to 83% exhaustion.
