Abstract

Alkaline Permanganate as A Reagent for the Determination of Cobalt

A. S. Fouda, M. M. Gouda and M.M. Elsemongy

Abstract:

A new potent iometric method is developed for quantitative determination of cobalt in cobalt salts using alkaline potassium permanganate. This method consists of titrating alkaline potassium permanganate in presence of sodium tellurate, ammonium oxalate, borax and ammonia at pH—10. with cobaltous ions. The reaction proceeds safely to completion because of the complexing effect of ammonia and borax together with oxalate towards CO2O3 formed, the latter when not complexed would influence greatly the stability of potassium permanganate. Errors due to atmospheric oxygen was avoided. The method is rapid, easy and accurate; the errors were always less than 2%.
