Abstract
New Electrochemical Synthesis of Polyglycols
Abstract:
The electrochemical polymerization of ethyleneglycol 1, 2-propyleneglycol, 1, 10-Decanediol Diethyleneglycol and catechol has been carried out in monophasic system, using various electrolytes and is observed that the chlorides of Zn+2, Ni+2, Fe+3, Sn+4 initiated polymerization apart from being acting as a supporting electrolyte. Other salts did not encourage such observation. Preferential advantage in cationic mechanism seen in the case of Zncl2. The moderate yields with rate of polymerization 21.3 (Rp) to 18.3 per hour and polymerization efficiency (p. E.) is around 118.393 to 75.949 moles/faraday. The varied parameters are solvents like ether, acetone and dimethyl formamide with various types of aryl and alkyl 1,2-diols and 1,0-diol. Current below 50 mA did not induce polymerisation and above that the current variation did not significantly change the polymer yield and quality. It was seen that the amount of polymer formed increased linearly with time and that the degree of polymerization gradually increase as the reaction proceeds in agreement with the step wise mechanism suggested. By changing the polymer concentration from 0.1 mole/lit. to 1.5 mole/lit, maximum yield of polymer was obtained.
