Abstract:
The extraction behaviour of Fe (II)-phenanthroline complex with amyl alcohol in presence of sodium nitrite as a salting out reagent, is investigated. Factors influencing the extraction process are examined. Maximum extraction is attained at a concentration of 3.5 g added as determined from absorbance measurements of the organic and aqueous layers at 510 nm, and from the distribution ratio values, D, of the complex. Evaluation of the solvation number of the extracted complex in the organic layer, confirmed the 1:3 Fe (Il)-phenanthroline composition. The method is applied for the determination of ferrous iron in some pharmaceutical preparations.
