Abstract:
The kinetics of zinc dissolution in dilute (0.1 M) nitric/acetic and chloroacetic acids has been studied over the temperature range : 20°- 35°C by measuring the conductivity. The metal dissolution process were found to be first-order with respect to the acid concentration. The calculated activation energies indicate the control of the dissolution process by diffusion. The substituent chlorine atoms in acetic acid molecule lower the dissolution activation energy and increase the rate of metal dissolution. Weight loss measurements were made for zinc dissolution in acetic acid and chloroacetic acids at 25°C.
