Abstract:
2',4'-Dihydroxy-5'-Bromochalcone oxime (DHBCO) has been synthesized and used as a new gravimetric reagent for Cu(II). In pH range of 3.0 to 6.0, this reagent gives water insoluble brown coloured complex with Cu(II). The complex was found to be insoluble in most of organic solvents and hence metal - ligand ratio could not be determined spectrophotometrically. It was found to be 1:1 [M:L] from gravimetric analysis which has been supported by the analysis of complex and determining metal ion content in the complex. The complex was ignited to oxide and from the weight of oxide also it was confirmed, that the stoichiometry is 1:1 [M:L]. The reagent was found suitable to determine Cu(II) gravimetrically at pH 4.5 and interference of many common cations and anions at this pH was also checked during the gravimetric analysis. The IR spectra of ligand and complex have also been studied to establish the nature of linkage of metal and the site of co-ordination. Applicability has been checked by using the reagent to determine copper in brass sample.
