Periodic oxidation studies is very most important reactions in the structural determination of degraded glucomannan from Abrus precatorius Linn seeds (Papilionaceae). It was done by using the sodium metaperiodate as oxidant. The degraded glucomannan after periodate oxidation reaction, it consumed 0.326 moles of formic acid with simultaneous consumption of 1.82 moles of oxidant per mole of anhydrohexose sugar unit after 120 hrs. Quantitative determination of the degraded hydrolysed compound yielded D-glucose and D-mannose in 1:5 molar ratio by paper chromatographic analysis.
