Abstract:
A new unsymmetrical Schiff base N,N'-propylenemono (salicylideneimine) mono (3-carboxysalicylideneimine) (LH3) has been synthesized by the condensation of equimolar quantities of propane-1,3-diamine, salicylaldehyde and 3-formylsalicylic acid. A polystyrene supported Schiff base, PSCH2-LH2 (I) has been synthesized by the reaction of chloromethylated polystyrene (PSCH2-Cl) and LH3. I reacts with a of bi-, tri-, tetra- and hexavalent metal ions and forms polystyrene supported coordination compounds [PSCH2-LM] where M = Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, MoO2, UO2), [PSCH2-LMn.2DMF], [PSCH2-LFeCl-DMF] and [PSCH2-LZr(OH)2.DMF]. The polystyrene supported coordination compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, spectral (IR, reflectance, ESR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The IR data establish the dibasic quadridentate (ONNO donor) behaviour of I. [PSCH2-L Mn. 2DMF], [PSCH2-LFeCl.DMF] and [PSCH2-LZr(OH)2.DMF] lose their coordinated DMF molecules(s) on heating in air. [PSCH2-LCu], [PSCH2-LCo], [PSCH2-LMn.2DMF], [PSCH2-LFeCl.DMF] are paramagnetic, while others are diamagnetic. A square planar structure for [PSCH2-LCu], [PSCH2-LCo] and [PSCH2-LNi], a tetrahedral structure for [PSCH2-LZn] and [PSCH2-LCd], an octahedral structure for [PSCH2-LMn.2DMF] and [PSCH2-LFeCl.DMF] and a pentagonal bipyramidal structure for [PSCH2-LZr(OH)2.DMF] have been suggested.
