Abstract
Detoxification of Carbaryl Pesticide Waste Water by Micellar and Metallomicellar Solutions
Sahar Mostafa Ahmed
Abstract:
The effect of cationic surfactant micelles, namely octadecyl isothiouronium bromide (I) and its metallomicelle, octadecyl isothiouronium bromodichloro cupprate complex (II) on the hydrolysis of carbaryl pesticide was studied. The rate of the pesticide decay in water was significantly accelerated in presence of both cationic micellar solutions. Furthermore, the copper (II) complex of this micellar was found to be much more effective nucleophilic reagent for the carbaryl decay than the micelle (I). Moreover, addition of sodium perborate to the micellar solution exhibited a potential acceleration of the decay noticed at the initial reaction time interval. Kinetic study showed that the degradation of carbaryl obeyed the first order reaction.
