Abstract:
A preconcentration method was developed for the determination of trace amounts of Ni(II) by atomic absorption spectrometry. The method is based on the retention of the metal cations by modified silica gel adsorbent. The adsorbed metals were then eluted with nitric acid and the Ni(II) was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The optimal extraction and elution conditions were studied. The effects of diverse ions on the preconcentration were also investigated. A preconcentration factor of 100 can easily be achieved. Calibration graph was obtained and the detection limit of the method for Ni(II) was 1.3 ng mL-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.66–1.32 % was obtained. The method was applied successfully to the determination of Ni(II) in water samples.
