Abstract:
Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of naphthols such as 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol has been investigated in glacial acetic acid as solvent in the temperature range 25-450 using pyridinium fluorochromate as a mild oxidizing agent. The overall order of oxidation of the naphthols is two and the individual order is one in each reactant. An increase in solvent polarity increases the reaction rate. The activation energy and other theromodynamic parameters are determined. The effect of varying the concentrations of perchloric acid and sodium perchlorate on the reaction rate are also found. A probable reaction mechnism is proposed
