In the present paper we describe the synthesis of 2-amino-5-fluoro-3-methyl and 2-amino-5-bromo-3-methyl-benzenethiols by the hydrolytic cleavage of 2-amino-6-Fluoro-4-methyl and 2-amino-6-bromo-4-methylbenzothiazoles which in turn were prepared by the cyclization of 4-fluoro-2-methyl and 4-bromo-2-methyl phenylthiourea by bromine in glacial acetic acid. These phenylthioureas were prepared by the reaction of 4-fluoro-2-methyl-and 4-bromo-2-methyl anilines with ammonium thiocynate in hydrochloric acid. The structure was confirmed by Physical data, I.R. and NMR.
