Abstract:
Kinetics of oxidation of aromatic aldehydes by N-chloronicotinamide (NCN) in 50% v/v aqueous acetic acid mixture have been investigated in the presence of HCIO4, Na2SO4 and NaCI by potentiometric method. The observed rate of oxidation is first-order with respect to oxidant [NCN], [H+ and zero-order with respect to [aldehydes]. The effect of varying ionic strength and dielectric constant has negligible effect on the rate of oxidation. Addition of nicotinamide (NA) has a retarding effect on the rate of oxidation. The products of oxidation are the corresponding acids. By studying the effect of temperature on the reaction rate, the Arrhenius and activation parameters have been calculated. A suitable mechanism has been proposed and a rate law explaining the experimental results is derived.
