Department of Chemistry, Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah Saudi Arabia.
The polarographic reduction and spectrophotometric behaviour of 2~benylidene-1,3-indandione and 5 of its substituted derivatives together with 1,3-indandione were studied in 20% Alcoholic Britton-Robinson buffers covering the pH range N3-11. A mechanism for the possible reduction mechanism was proposed, also the fidelity of linear free energy relationship for the compounds was tried through E1/2-σ and pKa-σ correlation.
