A new spectrophotometry method is developed for the determination of cephalexin. The method depends on the reaction of cephalexin with copper (II) at pH 10.5. The drug forms 1:1 complex with copper (II) with maximum absorption at 316 nm. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range between 0.15-1.30 mg/ml of cephalexin and the complex is stable for 24h. The precision of the method is 1.66%. The method was successfully applied for the determination of cephalexin in pharmaceutical preparation. The validity of the method was checked by applying the standard addition technique in addition to a comparison study between its results and these obtained by B. P. 1980 official method.
