Two types of stable complexes have been obtained from the reactions of some metal ions with 7-iodo-8-hydroxy quinoline-5-sulphonic -5-sulphonic acid (ferron) in aqueous solution. One has the formula [ML2(OH2)2]2+ for M2+[where M2+ = Co (II), Ni (II), Fe (II), Mn (II), Cu (II) and has been assigned trans octahedral complexes, the other has the formula [ML3]3+ [where M3+=Fe (III), Cr (III) or AI (III) and has been assigned cis octaheral complexes. Characterization has been done using elemental analysis, infrared, X-ray diffraction, reflectance spectra, magnetic susceptibility and thermal analysis.
KEYWORDS:Quinoline; 5-Sulphonic
