Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of Dl-Alanine by Potassium Permanganate (Part I)

"Oxidation of DL Alanine by permanganate in perchloric acid medium has been carried out. The oxidation was found to be first order in both oxidant and alanine concentrations. Various hypotheses for the mechanic of acid catalysis have been tested. The energy and entropy of activation have been calculated as 15.77 K. Cal. mole-1 and -26.40 e. u. respectively. A tentative mechanism has been proposed in consistent with the experimental data".
