Use of the [ CoCl4]2- colour system in concentrated HCl gives a simple method for a quick spectrophotometrical determination of Co (II) through the geometrical variation of its compound into the tetrahedral entity. The deep blue solution shows maximum absorbance at 621, 660 and 690 nm. Beer's law range is 6.0 - 50 ug Co/cm3. The band at λ max 630 nm has the maximum molar absortivity (E = 105 x 103) and a sensitivity of 0.056 ug Co/cm2. The percentage recovery range is 90-100%, and the method has been applied to the determination of Co (II) in various compounds.
