The mechanism of uptake of o-chloro, m-chloro and p-chlorophenols in aqueous media by Dowex 1x4 resin in OH- form has been studied at four different temperatures. The mechanism of uptake of o-chlorophenol is quite different from those for m- and p-chlorophenols. The uptake of o-chlorophenol seems to be controlled by chemical reaction in the initial stages while chemical reaction and particle diffusion operate in the later stages. For m- and p - chlorophenols the mechanism of uptake seems to be through intraparticle diffusion and chemical reaction; in the initial stages both mechanisms operate parallel and in the later stages particle diffusion seems to predominate.
