The kinetic study of oxidation of acetic, propionic, butyric, iso-butyric, valeric, iso-valeric and pivalic acids was studied by KMnO4 in aqueous H2SO4 medium. The orders of the reaction with respect to [oxidant] and [substrate] were one each. The effect of [H2SO4 ] was to increase the rate and from the correlation of rate with HO, HMO4 is proposed to be the reactive species. A probable mechanism in which HMnO4 and carboxylic acid are involved in a slow step is proposed and discussed.
