Metal chelates of bivalent transition metal ions,Cu(II) and Fe(II) of composition [Cu(L)2 ] and [Fe(L)2(H2 O)2] where L=Schiff base, have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of their elemental analysis, conductance measurement and spectral and magnetic studies. The chelates have 1:2 metal:ligand stoitiometry and all chelates are non electrolyte nature. The schiff bases and their metal complexes were screened for their biological activity against bacteria Escerichia coli, Salmonella typhi. The copper(II) chelates were found to be much active as compared to their Schiff base ligands. The Fe(II) chelates show poor activity against these bacteria.
