Isomerism is a powerful concept in chemistry. The use of the K value greatly simplifies the sketching of structural isomers in hydrocarbons. The calculation of the K value has been demonstrated. The of isomers and K values of selected hydrocarbons have been tabulated. The K value complements the octet rule. It is hoped that the use of K value will greatly enhance the teaching of structural isomerism and molecular geometry in organic compounds at undergraduate level.
