A variety of 2-amino-4-(substituted phenyl/anthryl)-6-(2'-pyridyl) pyrimidines (2A-F) were synthesized by reacting 1-(2'-pyridyl)-3- (substituted phenyl/anthryl)-2-propene-1-ones (1A-F) with guanidine hydrochloride. The required 1-(2'-pyridyl)-3- (substituted phenyl/anthryl)-2-propene-1-ones (1A-F) were prepared by the condensation of 2-acetyl pyridine with different aldehydes according to Claisen-Schmidt condensation. All these compounds were characterised by means of their IR, 1H NMR spectroscopic data and microanalyses. The synthesized pyrimidine derivatives were screened for their antimicrobial activity and some of the compounds showed significant activity.
