Acid gadolinium diphosphate doped with europium HGd1-xEuxP2O7.3H2O and HGd1-xEuxP2O7 have been prepared by reaction of acidic gadolinium and europium oxide solution with sodium diphosphate one. They were characterized by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Eu3+ luminescence spectroscopy. The luminescence spectra were recorded either at 300 or 77K. The Eu3+ ion is found to occupy a one principal crystallographic site with inhomogeneous distribution of three nearby sites in the HGdP2O7.3H2O structure. The lifetimes were measured for 5D0® 7F1 and 5D0®7F2 transitions 300K for both hydrated and anhydrous compounds. The results show that the lifetimes were higher in the case of HGd1-xEuxP2O7; this could be interpreted by an energy transfer occurring between Eu3+ and OH-.
