Kinetics of Ru(III) catalysed oxidation of diacetonealcohol(DAA) by trichloroisocyanuricacid (TCICA) in HOAc-HClO4 medium has been investigated at 313K. The reaction exhibits zero order with respect to [TCICA] and fractional order with respect to [DAA] and [H+]. The rate increased with increase in percentage of acetic acid and addition of Cl- ions has no effect on rate. It is established that the reactive oxidising species are HOCl and H2OCl+. Based on the experimental observations a mechanism involving the hydride ion abstraction by Ru(III) in the rate determining step have been proposed and discussed.
