Some new 2-amino-4-hydroxy-5-(substituted phenylazo)-6-methyl pyrimidines (2a-g) were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) bacteria and compared with standard drug amikacin. The compounds were found to be inactive against Staphylococcus aureus and showed moderate to good activity against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi by agar plate diffusion method.
