Uranyl ion sensitized photo-oxidation of chloro propionic acid has been studied. The effect of different reaction parameters like variation in the concentration of substrate and catalyst, variation in the pH of the reaction solution and the effect of polarity of solvent on the rate of reaction were studied. Oxalic acid has been characterized as the major photoproduct along with chloride ions. Intermediacy of uranium(V) is proved spectrophotometrically. A probable mechanism has been suggested.
