The interaction of lanthanide ions with substituted b-ketosulphides have been investigated by the Calvin - Bjerrum pH titration technique in 80% (V/V) ethanol-water medium at 0.1 M (NaClO4) ionic strength and at 298.15 K Lanthanide ions form both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes. The results are used to explain i) the mode of bonding in the complexes and ii) irregularities present in the complexes in terms of gadolinium break and tetrad effect. The validity of logk = apk+b relationship have also been tested for these complexes.
