2,5-Dihydroxyacetophenone benzoic hydrazone is proposed for detection and spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) in acidic medium. The yellow coloured complex conaining copper and the ligand in 1:1 molar ratio shows maximum absorption at 400 nm (e400nm = 1.1 x 104 l. mole-1 cm-1). Beer's law is obeyed for 0.30 to 6.00 μg ml-1 of copper. The method has ben applied to the determination of copper in alloy steels and plant leaves with good precision and accuracy.
