Air-dried and powdered roots of Syzygium cumini Linn were extracted with 80% ethanol after defatted with hexane. The concentrated ethanolic extract was partionated into water soluble and insoluble. The soluble fraction was concentrated under reduce pressure and fractionated into hexane, benzene, ether, ethylacetate and n-butanol. The n-butanolic extract gave positive Shinoda test. This fraction was chromatographed over silica gel column and eluted with ethylacetate and methanol in various proportions. The ethylacetate : methanol (3:2, v/v) fraction furnished a mixture of two compounds with clear distinct on tlc plate which were further purified on preparative tlc plate. These were marked as M-1 and M-2.
