A study has been carried out to determine the water quality of underground and surface water of some villages of Ramgarh Tehsil (Alwar) Rajasthan, using water quality index. 35 sites were selected for this purpose. The analysis was carried out for the parameters namely pH, EC, chloride, nitrate, fluoride, total dissolved solid, total suspended solid, total solids, total hardness, Ca-hardness, Mg-hardness, coliform, iron, arsenic and alkalinity. The values obtained were compared with standards perscribed by WHO, APHA and BIS. Then corresponding water quality index (WQI) were worked out for the observed water quality parameters. In this study, water from the various underground soruces were found to be of very poor quality and unsuitable for drinking and other purposes without further treatment.
