Twenty new copper(II) chloride and nitrate complexes with variously substituted 2,6-diphenylpiperidin-4-ones (L1)-(L10) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molecular weight determinations, molar conductance, magnetic, thermal and spectral studies. The results indicate that the chloride complexes are polymeric while the nitrate complexes are monomeric. The general formulae [Cu(L)(H2O)Cl2]n and [Cu(L)(H2O)3NO3]NO3 been assigned to chloride and nitrate complexes, respectively. Although piperidin-4-ones have two coordinating sites, namely ring nitrogen and carbonyl group, various studies indicate that complexation occurs only through ring nitrogen. Electronic spectral data reveal that all the complexes have octahedral geometry.
