Substituted schiff's bases 2a-o prepared by the treatment of 2-chloro-8-methyl-3-quinoline carbaldehyde 1 with different arylmines, on cyclisation with chloroacetyl chloride in presence of Et3N furnish 2-azetidinones 3a-o. The structure of the compounds synthesised have been assigned on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, NMR and Mass Spectral studies. The compounds were evaluated for antimicrobial screening against Gram positive, Gram negative and fungal strain such as Aspergillus niger. Most of the compounds showed significant activity against all the species of bacteria and fungi.
