Twelve 3-arylazo-4-hydroxy-1-phenyl quinolin-2[1H]-ones disperse dyes [II|a-l] were prepared by coupling 4-hydroxy-1-phenyl quinolin-2-[1H]-one [I] with various diazo components [IIa-l]. The compounds IIIa-l were characterised by elemental and spectral analyses and their dyeing performance on polyester fabriic were assessed. These compounds when applied on polyester fabric, gave grey, yellow, orange and brown shades with poor to good light fastness, very good to excellent wash fastness and poor to excellent exhaustion.
