Condensation of o-phenylenediamine with 3-aryl-1-(p-benzoylaminophenyl)-2-propene-1-ones (I a-j) yielded biologically active benzodiazepine derivatives (II a-j). Compounds (I a-j) were obtained by treating p-benzoylaminophenylacetophenone with different aromatic aldehydes in basic medium which underwent subsequently dehydration. The structure of newly synthesized compounds were established on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, PMR and mass spectral data. Antimicrobial activity has been performed by using cup-plate method against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. All the synthesized compounds have shown significant antimicrobial activity.
