Synthesis of Some New 2,4-(Substituted Diaryl)-2,3-Dihydro, 8-Methoxy 1,5-Benzothiazepines as Antibacterial Agents

The title compounds 3a-e have been synthesized from the corresponding 1-(2’-hydroxy-3’,5’-diiodo phenyl)-3-(substituted phenyl)-2-propen-1-ones (2) by condensation with 5-methoxy 2-amino thiophenol (1) in ethanol containing a few drops of piperidine followed by cyclisation in the presence of acetic acid. Some of the representative members have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherischia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris.
