2-Methoxy-4-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzaldehyde and 2-ethoxy-4-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzaldehyde on reaction with a of quarternised heterocyclic bases gave a series of highly coloured and lustrous cyanine dyes. Potentialities of the dyes for dyeing cotton, wool and silk wer e investigated. Dye obtained by the condensation of Fischer's base hydriodide and 2-ethoxy-4-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzaldehyde dyed cotton, wool and silk in bright red colour. The shade thus produced was found to be resistant to washing. New dyes were tested for photosensitive activity. One of them showed some promise.
