Studies on the larvicidal properties of the leaf extract of Goniothalamus montanus and the stem bark extract of Goniothalamus malayanus have led to the isolation of several bioactive sesquiterpenes and alkaloids. The major sesquiterpenes were identified as a-copaene, alloaromadendrene, a-amorphene, 7-methyl-4-methylene-1-(1-methylethyl)-naphthalene and cadalene. The leaf extract of G. montanus also gave one steroidal triterpene, stigmasterol which was isolated as a major component from the plant. The two alkaloids found to be present in the stem bark extract of Goniothalamus malayanus were ouregidione a 4,5-dioxoaporphine and the phenathrene lactam aristolactam Bll. Goniothalamin, one styryllactone goniothalenol and two acetogenins annonacin and goniothalamicin were also found.
KEYWORDS:Goniothalamus; montanus; malayanus; styryllactone goniothalenol
