Divalent metal salts of mono (hydroxyethoxyethyl) phthalate M[HEEP]2 containing ionic bonds in the molecule were prepared in high purity and high yield. Divalent metal salts of mono (hydroxyethoxyethyl) phthalate were synthesized by the addition of diethylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and divalent metal (Ca2, Hg2+, and Pb2+) acetate. These ionic diols were were characterised by elemental analysis, solubility, spectral studies (IR and FT-NMR) and thermogravtmetric analysis (TGA). The effect of the metal containing ionic diols on the growth of various micro-organisms were investigated by disc plate agar technique.
