Photo - Oxidation of 1,3-Di-p-Anisylisobenzofuran

The photooxidation of 1,3-di-p-anisylisobenzofuran in the presence of sunlight was monitored using UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The product that formed was isolated and characterized by GC - Mass, 1H. C-13 NMR spectroscopy. It was found that this compound take up an oxygen atom in a self sensitized process. The oxidation process was found to be slow in the solid state and in polar solvents, and fast in non-polar solvents.
